Historical Markers in Union County
The county was probably named for Union District, South Carolina, at the suggestion of Nimrod Wilkins whose parents were early pioneers from that area. Union County was created from portions of Tippah, Lee, and Pontotoc counties in 1870, during the Reconstruction era after the Civil War.
